Trail Report #10, Winter 2009-2010

No new snow in the north east this week. And the day time temperatures have been in the 40’s. Many of the trails south of Maidstone Lake are closed. As the expanse of trails in the northeast kingdom shrinks because of the lack of snow our trails are seeing more and more riders. This high use has caused the trails to wear down even more. As usual, the higher in elevation the trail better the conditions. Our groomer operators have been out and tried to smooth the trails as best they can. We urge everyone to ride with caution because the poor sections of trail can come up fast. Plus there are no snow banks on the trail edges to keep you on the trail. The trail edge snow banks were used to cover bare spots. Once off the trail there may be deeper snows. Temperatures are expected to be below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. Clear weather is also expected through the weekend. Spring conditions apply to all trails.

The logging operation on the Paul Stream Road between Brown’s Mill and the Paul Granby camp – a section of the 98 trail - has been completed. The road is now open to snowmobiles only. Please remember that the speed limit on State of Vermont lands and many of the surrounding properties is 35 mph. There are those out there that would like to ban snowmobiling especially on state and federal lands and any excuse will do.
