Trail Report #1 Winter 2013-2014
The opening of the season was December 16, blessed by a snow of 10” plus the weekend before. The snow however was very dry and groomer operators report that while it packed down it was very thin. Following the snow was rain, sleet, and snow mix. This combination was good for the base but did not add to the depth of the base. And it left the trails very icy making corners difficult to maneuver. We have a couple of areas where are trails are blocked by downed trees. Trail F-2 to the Village of Guildhall were hardest hit by the warm temperatures and more rain than snow. No grooming is taking place in this area at this time. Active logging area EX-50… 105 N at EX-49 is temporarily closed up through EX 50 and on to Stone Dam (Rte 102). Trails are posted CLOSED TO SNOMO. The gate at Stone Dam remains locked and the DC power line access road remains closed all the way to just south of EX 49. The logging operation is center around EX-50 and thus there is no access to Bloomfield or NH using F-102. The logger is trying to complete the project at EX-50 and then allow reopening the trail. Detour signs are being posted at EX-49 and EX-34 to help riders get to Island Pond, Canaan, and points north.
At EX-42 South America Pond Rd is plowed and closed to snowmobiles all the way in from VT 105 to the Madison Brook gate – EX-401 however at EX-42 VAST Rte 102 crosses this road although we won’t be grooming EX 343 until the logging job is complete. There is a logging operation at EX-40 and our trail shows the road from EX-402 to the Madison Brook gate. The junction EX-401 has moved down the hill a bit. There is a logging operation on the F-2 trail at it heads into Guildhall village from the north. Every effort has been made to keep the snowmobile trail separate for this logging operation. There is road sharing on the old railroad bed up to EX-541. Whew!
