Well the season started off with a bang! We had snow day after day and some really cold weather resulting in some significant accumulation. It came so early that signing was a real challenge as was our attempt to clear fallen trees and brush. Our trails in the upper elevations had plenty of snow. Opening day had reasonably good snow cover even though we had not been able to groom all of our trails. Well then mother nature decided it was time for fall to return. So this week (Dec 17) temperatures warmed up and late in the week the rain set in. There has been over an inch of rain so far and temperatures in the high 40’s. Temps remained that way overnight as well. Thus the trails have become soft and mushy. Many clubs closed their trails to prevent further harm to the base. Unfortunately, the cold weather came after the snow and thus the ground is not frozen meaning that the snow melts from the bottom as well as the top. We are asking sledders to stay off the trails until an extended period of cold returns and even then we need snow to replace what has been lost. Trail conditions are poor overall.
